Authentic Expression – Lessons of the Throat Chakra

Since the solstice I have been waking up at 3 am every night. First I thought it was my youngest son moving around and wanting to co-sleep again, but even when he is in his own bed or with his father I am still being woken up at the same time. I wasn’t getting a clear understanding of the message from spirit. And then out of no where I lost my voice. I woke up with what felt like broken glass in my throat and then, finally, I got it. I am needing to express my truth more. I am needing to listen and communicate on a deeper level, firstly with myself, and then with others. I am still playing the “good girl” act and being far too polite. I am still overriding my boundaries and my personal needs to please others and to keep the “peace”. Over the past 12 months I have lost my voice several times and each time another layer has opened up for me.

I felt to dive deeper into the throat chakra and share some information and practices that are helpful to open your voice and move into authentic and empowered expression.

The Throat Chakra, what is it? In the realm of chakras, the throat chakra holds immense significance as the center of communication, self-expression, and authenticity. When this energy center is balanced and open, we can articulate our thoughts, feelings, and desires with clarity and confidence. However, many of us struggle with a blocked or underactive throat chakra, hindering our ability to express ourselves authentically. Often manifesting, like what I am experiencing at the moment, as laryngitis, or sore throats. What is not being expressed? And how can we fully open open the throat chakra and unleash the power of our true voice? Below are some practices that I find useful.

Expressive Writing: Engage in regular journaling to express your thoughts and emotions freely. Write without judgment or censoring, allowing your true voice to emerge and be heard. This for me is the first port of call, as it allows me to fully release all the unspoken words, all the frustrations, fears, longing, anger what ever it is that I can’t seem to say out loud. Sometimes I then create a ritual and burn the writing and other times I keep it. There is a feeling of lightness with this practice that is most effective to get the inner voice out of my head and into the physical world.

Creative Expression: Engaging in creative activities such as singing, dancing, painting, or playing a musical instrument can help unblock and stimulate the throat chakra. Belting out a tune, drumming, moving and sometimes just releasing guttural, primal sounds is enough to move the stagnant energy. It also makes you feel good so any of these forms of creative expression really invite you to let the energy flow and your inner voice find its unique expression.

Mantras and affirmations are powerful tools for opening and balancing the throat chakra. There are many out there and you can certainly come up with your own. Chanting the sacred mantra “HAM” (pronounced as “hahm”): This is the primary bija (seed) mantra associated with the throat chakra. Chanting “HAM” vibrates the energy in the throat region, helping to clear any blockages and stimulate the flow of authentic self-expression.

Some simple and effective affirmations can be:

“I SPEAK MY TRUTH”: This affirmation mantra focuses on empowering you to speak your truth confidently and assertively. By repeating this mantra, you affirm your commitment to authentic communication and encourage the opening of the throat chakra.

“I EXPRESS MY UNIQUE VOICE”: This mantra encourages you to embrace and express your unique perspective and creativity. It supports the development of your authentic voice and assists in overcoming any self-doubt or fear of judgment associated with self-expression.

Crystal Healing: Certain crystals like blue lace agate, lapis lazuli, and aquamarine are associated with the throat chakra. Place them on your throat or wear them as jewelry to support chakra healing and enhance communication abilities. I often wear crystals when I need to be super clear in my communication and find it helpful if you are into crystals this can be something for you.

These are just a few practices that you might find helpful, there are many more out there, these are the ones I found useful. And remember, be gentle with yourself. I am reminded as I sit with this immense blockage in my throat today that I need to be more mindful of my default ways of being and knowing that what I have to share is worthy and valid. That it’s ok to say no and allow myself to get a bit messy. That I don’t need to carry excuses for other people’s behaviour and triggers. That the moment I am honest with myself and stand in my authenticity it all ripples out and I get closer to my authentic expression.
